I’m Playing Terraria and I Think I’m Doing It Wrong

After a short gaming break after my Just Cause 2 100% challenge, I am now testing the Terraria waters with my gaming stick.  I’ve played for several hours and I think I like it, but I think I’m doing it wrong.

All I do is dig dig dig until I find something that isn’t dirt-mud-stone-sand-whatever and then I mine it.  Right now, it is exactly like Minecraft, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be.

And then sometimes while I’m mining, things show up that are killable with the sword that I crafted.

I hit a thing with a sword and it died.

Apparently, there are huge monsters to fight and cool potions and things, but I haven’t experienced any of that yet.  Gameplay mostly consists of mining and killing little creatures that get in the way.

So the question is, for anyone who plays Terraria, am I doing it wrong?  When do the sweet things happen?  I want a huge sword with two swords at the end of it, each with three maces along the blade.  When does that become a thing my character has?
